Wombat - Tough Butts, Soft Hearts

Meet the Aussie underdog with a bum of steel and a heart of gold — the wombat! Built low to the ground and tough as nails, these chunky diggers are nature’s bulldozers, tunnelling through the bush with powerful paws and butts that double as armour. (Yep — their rumps are made of reinforced cartilage, and they’ll literally block a burrow entrance with their backside to fend off predators like foxes, wild dogs, and even the odd confused farmer!)

Wombats are marsupials, meaning they carry their joeys in a backwards-facing pouch — clever, right? No dirt in the baby’s face when Mum’s on digging duty. And though they may look gruff, wombats are surprisingly gentle when raised by wildlife carers — just ask any Aussie rehabilitator who’s ever tried to reclaim their boots from a cheeky wombat with a shoe fetish!

Sadly, wombats often find themselves on the wrong side of roads, fences, and farmland. While they play a vital role in healthy ecosystems by aerating soil and creating shelter for other wildlife, their burrows can sometimes frustrate farmers — even though the wombats were there long before the fence posts!

Every wombat we feature celebrates these misunderstood icons of the bush. Whether it’s their square poos (true story), their bulldozer attitude, or their teddy-bear looks, there’s nothing quite like a wombat.
